Deformation Spaces of G–trees and Automorphisms of Baumslag–solitar Groups

چکیده
We construct an invariant deformation retract of a deformation space of G–trees. We show that this complex is finite dimensional in certain cases and provide an example that is not finite dimensional. Using this complex we compute the automorphism group of the classical non-solvable Baumslag–Solitar groups BS(p, q). The most interesting case is when p properly divides q. Collins and Levin computed a presentation for Aut(BS(p, q)) in this case using algebraic methods. Our computation uses Bass–Serre theory to derive these presentations. Additionally, we provide a geometric argument showing Out(BS(p, q)) is not finitely generated when p properly divides q.

Stable Commutator Length in Baumslag–solitar Groups and Quasimorphisms for Tree Actions
This paper has two parts, on Baumslag–Solitar groups and on general G–trees. In the first part we establish bounds for stable commutator length (scl) in Baumslag–Solitar groups. For a certain class of elements, we further show that scl is computable and takes rational values. We also determine exactly which of these elements admit extremal surfaces. In the second part we establish a universal l...
متن کاملDeformation and rigidity of simplicial group actions on trees
We study a notion of deformation for simplicial trees with group actions (G{ trees). Here G is a xed, arbitrary group. Two G{trees are related by a deformation if there is a nite sequence of collapse and expansion moves joining them. We show that this relation on the set of G{trees has several characterizations, in terms of dynamics, coarse geometry, and length functions. Next we study the defo...
متن کاملOn the Isomorphism Problem for Generalized Baumslag-solitar Groups
Generalized Baumslag–Solitar groups (GBS groups) are groups that act on trees with infinite cyclic edge and vertex stabilizers. Such an action is described by a labeled graph (essentially, the quotient graph of groups). This paper addresses the problem of determining whether two given labeled graphs define isomorphic groups; this is the isomorphism problem for GBS groups. There are two main res...
متن کاملCubulating Graphs of Free Groups with Cyclic Edge Groups
We prove that if G is a group that splits as a finite graph of finitely generated free groups with cyclic edge groups, and G has no non-Euclidean Baumslag-Solitar subgroups, then G is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved cube complex. In addition, if G is also wordhyperbolic (i.e., if G contains no Baumslag-Solitar subgroups of any type), we show that G is linear (in fact, is...
متن کاملA Note on Twisted Conjugacy and Generalized Baumslag-solitar Groups
A generalized Baumslag-Solitar group is the fundamental group of a graph of groups all of whose vertex and edge groups are infinite cyclic. Levitt proves that any generalized BaumslagSolitar group has property R∞, that is, any automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. We show that any group quasi-isometric to a generalized Baumslag-Solitar group also has property R∞. Thi...
